Daniel Besser has been Managing Director of the German Stem Cell Network (GSCN) e.V. since 2012. Previously, he conducted research on the pluripotency of stem cells and the reprogramming of somatic cells into pluripotent stem cells.
Daniel Besser studied biology at the Free University of Berlin and received his PhD from the University of Basel in 1996 with a thesis at the Friedrich Miescher Institute, Basel on signal transduction and gene regulation. Until 2004, he conducted research at Rockefeller University, New York, USA on pluripotency in mouse and human embryonic stem cells, among other topics. Thereafter, until 2011, he led a research group at the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine in Berlin on pluripotent stem cells and reprogramming of somatic cells to induced pluripotent stem cells.
Since 2012, he has been the Managing Director of the German Stem Cell Network (GSCN). The GSCN promotes national and international scientific communication on stem cells and develops information programs for schools and the general public in Germany.
Daniel Besser is a partner and member of numerous national and international professional societies, e.g. EuroStemCell and EuroGCT, the Society for Developmental Biology, and the International Society for Stem Cell Research (ISSCR).
