Alena Buyx is a medical doctor with academic degrees in philosophy and sociology. She is Chair of the German Ethics Council and Professor of Ethics in Medicine and Health Technologies at the Technical University of Munich.
Alena Buyx studied medicine, philosophy and sociology. She habilitated in ethics, history and theory of medicine. She is currently Professor of Ethics in Medicine and Health Technologies at the Medical Faculty of the Technical University of Munich (TUM), where she is also Director of the Institute for the History and Ethics of Medicine. Previously, she conducted research at the University of Kiel, Harvard University, University College London and was Deputy Director of the English Ethics Council.
Her research focus ranges from medical ethics issues in clinical practice to biotechnological innovations and justice issues in modern health systems. She has been Chair of the German Ethics Council since 2020.
Alena Buyx holds numerous (inter)national memberships, for example in the National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina and the Central Ethics Committee at the German Medical Association and was a member of the Corona Expert Council of the Federal Government.
