Dirk Lanzerath is Professor of Philosophy at the University of Bonn, where he heads the German Reference Center for Ethics in the Life Sciences (DRZE). He is also Secretary General of the European Network of Research Ethics Committees (EUREC).
Lanzerath studied Biology, Philosophy and Educational Sciences in Bonn and habilitated in the Faculty of Philosophy. As an expert in medical ethics, Lanzerath is deputy chairman of the Central Ethics Committee at the German Medical Association (ZEKO) and a member of the Research Ethics Committee of the Chamber of Physicians Northrhine. In addition, he is particularly involved in science and research ethics issues and a better integration of ethics committees that consult scientists to ensure good scientific practice. It is his concern to better link the research process and the needs of society. His current research projects and publications address, among others, new ethical issues in artificial intelligence, modern brain research, bioeconomics, and biodiversity. Lanzerath has coordinated numerous EU projects with large international consortia on the ethical analysis of new technologies and the development of research ethics education and training programs.
