Huber is a retired bishop of the Protestant Church of Berlin-Brandenburg-schlesische Oberlausitz. He worked as a professor at the universities of Marburg and Heidelberg, among others. He is currently an honorary professor at the Humboldt University in Berlin and the University of Stellenbosch (South Africa). He is the recipient of numerous honorary doctorates and other awards such as the Federal Cross of Merit.

As a theological ethicist, Huber contributes to important debates on bioethics, the ethics of digitalization, questions of religious-ideological plurality, and other issues with a wide range of publications and statements. Relevant for his analyses and reflections on the ethical implications of reproductive medicine as well as on research on and with embryonic stem cells are, among others, his books "Der gemachte Mensch. Christlicher Glaube und Bioethik“ and „Ethik. Die Grundfragen unseres Lebens von der Geburt bis zum Tod“.
